Non-Destructive Testing (NDT)
Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) is now a common part of quality control operations used to examine components prior to dispatch for any defects that may result in premature failure and to ensure asset integrity. Furthermore, with increasing levels of litigation, more responsibility is placed on the manufacturer to warrant products, leading to an increase in popularity of NDT techniques and products.
While commonly used as part of a pre-dispatch quality control process, NDT techniques can also be used to assess components in service and even in-situ such as pipelines and other engineering structures.
One common technique used in NDT is radiographic testing, sometimes called industrial radiography. This method is similar to medical radiography method and is able to detect flaws using x-rays. AXT can supply replacement x-ray tubes from Varex Imaging and Comet or complete radiographic NDT systems from Rigaku and Yxlon.
Radiographic NDT techniques are also used for baggage inspection at airports and mail/package inspection at mail/freight sorting facilities.
